What is Marine Cargo Insurance?

Any business that has goods moving around either via own vehicles or external freight companies has a requirement for marine cargo insurance. This form of insurance provides protection to companies if their goods sustain damage or loss whilst in transit by road, sea or air.

Freight companies and haulage contractors generally limit their liability for damage occurring during transit and a marine cargo policy can cover the shortfall. In addition haulage and freight companies need to insure their liability for goods in their care, custody and control and a marine policy provides this protection.

Cover is always subject to the policy terms and conditions.

Examples of Marine Cargo Insurance Claims

A manufacturing company held an annual marine cargo insurance policy to cover shipments of raw materials coming from China. A shipment was damaged during a transit and the company claimed for the loss from their marine cargo insurance policy.

A furniture company was using a haulage contractor to deliver product to customers. During one such transit a truck overturned and damaged the product. The haulage company was carrying the goods subject to IRHA conditions which in this case only covered 5% of the damaged goods. The furniture company was able to claim for their marine cargo policy for the loss.

A haulage contractor was carrying goods for a machinery company when their truck was involved in an accident. The machinery in transit was damaged and the haulage contractor claimed from their marine cargo liability policy for the loss.
