What is Engineering & Machinery Insurance?

There are a number of different types of engineering insurance policy including:

ADFT (Accidental Damage, Fire & Theft) Engineering Insurance
This covers damage to or loss of owned plant, machinery and equipment. This typically covers mobile plant such excavators, cranes or forklifts and should extend to cover overturning risk.

Hired-In-Plant Insurance
Almost every individual or business that hires in plant does so subject to terms and conditions of hire (often printed on the back of invoices or delivery dockets). These terms and conditions transfer liability for damage or loss of the plant/equipment during the hire period, to the hirer. A hired-in-plant insurance policy provides cover for this risk.

Engineering Statutory Inspection/Examination
Certain items of plant and machinery are required by law to undergo regular inspections by a competent person. The legislation applies to both lifting and pressure equipment. Engineering insurance companies provide this service through a nationwide network of qualified engineers and this service is often arranged along with the relevant insurances for this equipment.

Machinery Movement Insurance
Companies that dismantle, lift, move and install machinery, equipment or other assets have an obligation to ensure that they do not damage the equipment in their care, custody or control. Contract or hire conditions may limit this liability. Machinery Movement Insurance covers claims arising out of a damage to such equipment whilst being dismantled/moved/lifted/installed. It is relevant for any company in the business of machinery movement including crane hire contractors. In addition, we can arrange machinery movement for companies wishing to move their own assets either using their own equipment or external contractors.

Always subject to the policy terms and conditions.

Examples of Engineering & Machinery Insurance Claims

A crane turnover over on site and was completely destroyed. The contractor claimed for the pre-accident-value of the crane through their engineering insurance.

A contractor hired an MEWP and it was stolen from site overnight. The hire company demanded payment of €60k as this was part of their written terms and conditions of hire. The claim was paid under the contractors Hired-In-Plant insurance policy.

An employee sustained a serious injury due to failure of a gantry crane at his workplace. The employer was able to demonstrate that the crane had been inspected by their insurers at regular intervals in line with regulations and any defects were rectified.

An employee of a crane hire contractor failed to adequately secure a load during a lift for a regular customer. The load dropped to the ground causing a total loss and damaging the crane. The crane hire contractor successfully claimed for the damage to the good-on-hook under their machinery movement policy and the damage to the crane under their engineering owned-plant policy.

Why purchase Engineering & Machinery Insurance?

Plant and machinery is a significant investment for business. Unfortunately, accidents do happen and theft incidents are common. It is important that the right asset protection is in place to insulated businesses from these losses.

Engineering insurance provides bespoke cover for these assets and can include important risks such as overturning and operator error. In addition, companies that hire in plant and equipment (including cranes) generally do so subject to hire conditions. These hire conditions transfer liability for damage or loss of the plant during the hire, to the hirer. This equipment can be worth hundreds of thousands (or millions) of euro and without the right protection the hirer will be faced with legal action for the costs of any damage or loss.

Other engineering covers such as machinery movement provide important protection for companies against loss or damage to assets during movement.
