We work with specialist underwriters across Ireland, UK & Europe to provide bespoke client solutions including EPA compliant cover.

What is Environmental Liability Insurance?

Every business (and investor) has a legal obligation (duty of care) to ensure that they do not pollute the environment.

Traditional liability insurance policies provide limited cover for sudden and unforeseen pollution events. Environmental Liability Insurance provides wider cover for a range of sudden, accidental and gradual pollution risks.

Examples of Environmental Liability Claims

An action was taken against a factory after it was discovered that one of its tanks had leaked into a nearby stream. The incident was not covered by the public liability insurance as the event was not sudden and unforeseen. Fortunately the factory had Environmental Liability Insurance which covered the costs.

Why purchase Environmental Liability Insurance?

Traditional liability insurance policies provide limited cover for sudden and unforeseen pollution events. Environmental Liability Insurance provides wider cover for a range of sudden, accidental and gradual pollution risks.

Many companies are required by the EPA to provide a financial provision for the possible costs of remediation at sites containing potentially polluting material. This financial provision can take the form of cash, on-demand bonds, parent company guarantee, legal charge on property or Environmental Liability Insurance. Environmental Liability Insurance is often the preferred option as it is cost effective and does not tie up capital. Underwriters can often give an indication of premium once provided with the most recent Environmental Liability Risk Assessment (ELRA).
