The current uncertainty and the likelihood of a no-deal Brexit are causing confusion for many motor insurance policyholders. Should a no-deal Brexit take place on 29th March 2019, some important changes may impact your personal and/or commercial motor insurance.

Green Cards

A Green Card is an internationally recognised insurance document that provides proof of the minimum compulsory motor insurance cover required by the relevant country. Currently, Irish-registered vehicles that travel within the EU are covered by the terms of the EU Motor Insurance Directive. However, a no-deal Brexit would see the UK withdraw from this directive, meaning Irish motorists will require a Green Card to travel there.

If you are planning on driving your vehicle in Northern Ireland or the rest of the UK, following a no-deal Brexit you will be required to have a Green Card or you may be subjected to legal penalties and/or fines in the UK.

The Green Card is simply a proof of insurance – there is no change to your insurance policy. Each vehicle requires its own specific Green Card. If you require a Green Card, please call us on 049 433 2944 and we’ll arrange same.

UK Driving Licences

The Road Safety Authority has advised that in the event of a no-deal Brexit, UK driving licence holders living in Ireland will not be able to continue to drive here on that licence. Affected drivers should exchange their UK driving licence for an equivalent Irish driving licence before 29th March 2019. Following a no-deal Brexit, UK driving licences will not be valid for exchange, and you will need to apply for an Irish learner permit as a first-time driver.

Please be aware that your policy of insurance requires you to have a valid driving licence at all times. Any changes to your licence type, category or validity must to be notified to us immediately.
