What is Public Liability Insurance?

Every business has a legal obligation (duty of care) not to cause injury to any third party or damage to third party property. But regardless of how careful we might be, accidents happen.

If, during the course of carrying on your business you accidentally cause injury to a third party or damage their property, a public liability insurance policy will pay the compensation costs subject to the policy terms and conditions. In the event that you believe you have been wrongly accused, then public liability insurance will pay the costs of a legal defence as well as any compensation which may be awarded against you in a court.

Always subject to the policy terms and conditions.

Examples of Public Liability Claims

You are a builder working on a house extension. A piece of equipment accidentally drops from scaffolding and hits a third party on the head.

You own a shop. One of your employees cleans the floor but forgets to put up signs to warn customers. A customer slips and falls, sustaining a back injury.

You are a consultant. During a customer visit, someone trips on your laptop power lead sustaining a wrist injury.

Why purchase Public Liability Insurance?

Even small incidents such as a trip or slip can settle in court for tens of thousands of euros plus legal costs. Some public liability claims settle for millions, especially where there are significant and ongoing injuries (a brain injury for example).

Without public liability insurance you or your business would be required to fund all of the legal and compensation costs yourself.

Does Public Liability Insurance cover claims from unpaid helpers in the business?

No. Anyone helping you in the business whether paid or unpaid is deemed to be an employee and you should have Employers Liability Insurance to cover such claims.
